The top stories in psychedelic research, policy, and business

RESEARCH

The worldā€™s largest real-world psilocybin study

Thereā€™s no doubt about it. Psychedelic-assisted therapy would improveā€”even saveā€”countless lives.

The problem is, the clinical model just doesnā€™t reflect how most people use psychedelics today.

Psychedelic-assisted therapy costs $4k a session.

Well yeah, thatā€™s one reasonā€¦ šŸ˜“

We have a serious accessibility problem. And thatā€™s why the latest study from researchers at Johns Hopkins is so encouraging. In the largest ever prospective survey of naturalistic psilocybin use, they found that taking mushrooms in the ā€œreal worldā€ (without a therapist) still led to lasting benefits.

The researchers followed 2,800+ adults beforeā€”and up to 3 months afterā€”their (on average, 3.1-gram) mushroom trip. And the results were overwhelmingly positive.

  • šŸ˜ 42% were depressed before ā†’ only 15% were after

  • šŸ˜° 29% were highly anxious before ā†’ only 15% were after

  • šŸ„“ 16% abused alcohol before ā†’ only 11% did after

  • šŸ«‚ 50% improved their relationships with others

  • šŸ§‘ā€šŸ’» 27% noticed better performance at work

  • šŸ’Ŗ 27% started exercising more

  • šŸ 24% ate a more nutritious diet

  • šŸ˜€ 94% found the experience beneficial overall

Worth mentioning: having a sitter or guide present was NOT a meaningful predictor of any of these outcomes. But a full-on mystical experience was (and 22% were so lucky). āœØ

So if a psychedelic therapist doesnā€™t fit your budget, no worries. You canā€™t pay for cosmic intervention, anyway.

MICRODOSES

šŸŒ David Attenborough not included: Watching nature-themed videos may improve outcomes in psychedelic-assisted therapy for alcohol addiction.

šŸ‘ƒ Sniff back from that ledge: In a Phase 2 study, Seelos Therapeuticsā€™ intranasal racemic ketamine spray reduced symptoms of depression in adults at imminent risk of suicide.

šŸ™‹ Take away the pain: Researchers at UMich investigating psilocybin as a treatment for fibromyalgia are seeking study volunteers.

šŸ’Š Concurrent use: Psilocybin may be effective for treatment-resistant depression, even in people who continue taking SSRIs.

POLICY

Feds, quit meddling with psychedelic-friendly states

So your local government has taken the brave and progressive step to decriminalize psychedelics. Hooray! You can now exercise cognitive liberty without fear of criminal prosecution. šŸ™Œ

ā€¦ or so you thought. Next thing you know, the DEA is busting through your door to lay down the full weight of the federal law. šŸ˜±

Okay, okay, relax. It was just a hypothetical. But with more and more US cities and states enacting pro-psychedelic policy reform, itā€™s certainly not outside the realm of possibility.

Now, avoiding this exact scenario is the reason Congressman Robert Garcia (D-CA) introduced new legislation this week. His 2-page bill would prohibit federal agencies from interfering with statesā€™ own laws on psilocybin.

Why don't you mind your business?

We got a good thing going here, alright? šŸ¤«

When he drafted the Validating Independence for State Initiatives on Organic Natural Substances (or VISIONS) Act 2023, Rep. Garcia took a little inspo from cannabis history. He says he copied language directly from similar measures that got the feds to stop enforcing cannabis prohibition, despite the fact thatā€”like psilocybinā€”itā€™s still illegal at the federal level, too.

Smart man. Why reinvent the wheel?

MICRODOSES

šŸ†“ Free.99: A new bill proposed in Michigan would legalize psychedelic plants and fungi, as long as people who grow and share them arenā€™t paid or given anything valuable in return.

šŸ‘€ The sincerest form of flattery: An Indiana Congresswoman says the state should copy Oregonā€™s legal psilocybin program if it will help keep Hoosiers alive.

šŸ¤· Toss up: Californiaā€™s governor, who shared mixed feelings about psychedelics, is still undecided on whether heā€™ll sign the legalization bill on his desk.

šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ŗ EuroTrip: The European Medicines Agency (EMA) included psychedelics in its new draft guidelines for depression drug development. Theyā€™re taking public comments through March 2024.

BUSINESS

An iconic psychedelic duo emerges

The hottest collab of 2023 just dropped. You mean Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj? Nah. Jonas Brothers and TXT? Get real.

Itā€™s psychedelic powerhouses, Cybin and Fluence, who just joined forces to advance the field of psychedelic therapy. šŸ«³šŸŽ¤

So yeah, we wouldnā€™t recommend holding your breath for a fire mixtape anytime soon. (Sorry.) But thereā€™s still a good reason theyā€™re teaming up.

  • šŸ„ The situation: Cybin is getting closer to launching a Phase 3 trial of CYB003, its psilocybin analogue, for major depressive disorder.

  • šŸ¤” The problem: Theyā€™re gonna need lots of qualified facilitators to run such a massive, global study. Not many exist today.

  • šŸ’” The solution: So they tapped Fluence, a respected (and Oregon-approved) psilocybin training provider, to help select and train facilitators for the research.

Cybinā€™s been all over the news lately. Last month, they acquired their competitor Small Pharma, creating the psychedelic industryā€™s largest IP portfolio in the process. Then last week, the billionaire Steve Cohen bought ~19 million shares of the company, signaling to outside investors that psychedelics are a buy.

The big-brain move here is that Cybin is skating where the puck is going. See, itā€™s not just about the trial. If/when their drug is approved, now there will be a whole crop of freshly certified facilitators ready for showtime.

ā˜ļø Pro tip: A version of Cybinā€™s EMBARK training program is available online for free, no strings attached. Even if you have no desire to facilitate psychedelic sessions for others, you might learn a thing or two for your own journeys.

MICRODOSES

šŸ«‚ Empathy skills: TheraPsil, a nonprofit advancing legal access to psychedelics in Canada, is launching an MDMA-assisted psychotherapy training program.

šŸ«€ Default alive: Numinus is cutting costs to fast-track its path to profitability.

šŸ’† Focus, team: Filament and Jaguar Health have formed a joint venture to tackle ADHD and other mental health conditions with plant-derived medicines.

šŸ§‘ā€šŸ’» Perks of the job: Enthea, a health plan startup, now offers ketamine-assisted therapy as a workplace benefit to employers nationwide.

šŸ’° Donā€™t spend it all in one place: Clearmind Medicine raised $2.25 million through a public offering to cover operating expenses, R&D, and possibly future acquisitions.

šŸ“ˆ Business is booming: The psychedelic drug market could rip to $7.2 billion by 2029, according to a leading data analytics company.
